1. How and when did you start your career as a wedding planner?

I studied event management at university and commenced a career in the field after graduation. Five years ago, I got married in the UK whilst living in Dubai and realized how challenging it was not being in the same country during the planning process. On my Big Day, I found myself problem-solving and clock-watching, rather than stepping back and enjoying every second, which is what I should have been doing. It was still a fantastic and memorable day, but if I had had a wedding planner, the whole occasion would have been a lot more relaxing. That’s what led me to start up my own agency The Perfect Moment Wedding Planners, which later evolved into Aghareed.

2. How would you describe what you do?

As a wedding concierge, Aghareed receives various enquiries around all elements of a wedding, from full wedding consultancy to invite design, sourcing of favours and on-the-day planning. From a personal point of view, I see my role as one of a PA – I am dedicated to the bride and groom to make their dream wedding a reality.

3. What’s a typical work week like?

There is a great deal of multi-tasking during the busy season, as we tend to juggle around 10 weddings at any one time. Each wedding will have daily tasks, such as venue bookings, supplier meetings, floral samplings, searching for personal touches, ensuring cost-saving elements, wedding rehearsals and of course, the paperwork that comes with the job, such as invoicing, action plans, event sheets and chasing suppliers for the security forms needed on the day of the wedding.

4. What do you like about your job?

I have a passion for weddings, they are such happy occasions and I always shed a tear when the bride walks into the room, or down the aisle, and sees her husband for the first time. It is a magical and joyous moment. I particularly like the fact that my work is undertaken in Dubai, where I get to work with couples of different nationalities and from all walks of life. I enjoy experiencing the multi-faceted aspects of such weddings – each one is completely unique to that couple and their beliefs.

5. What is the most challenging task in wedding planning?

Understanding the true vision of the couple. The beauty of a wedding is the flexibility one can incorporate in its theme and agenda, so it is important that we spend time getting to know the couple and really understand what is important to them. Sometimes brides find it difficult to get their vision across and we would hate a wedding to be something that the couple did not properly envisage.

6. What’s your favourite wedding theme and why?

I don’t think I have a favourite theme, there are far too many to choose from. However, I do love it when couples bring through their personalities into the themes with things like individualised stationary, favours that are hand-made, monograms that are brought through the design… these are the personal touches are what really make a wedding unique to the couple.

7. What is a common misconception people have about wedding planners?

That we are an expensive luxury. A lot of people think it is an element to the wedding they can remove, but having a wedding planner not only means you will be stress-free on the day, it also means that – in Aghareed’s case at least – you get access to in-house partners who offer the most competitive rates in the industry and who are the most reliable.

8. What is the most rewarding thing in your job?

Watching guests have a great time! Weddings are such an emotional day – I have never come across a wedding where no one cries at some point! They are such happy occasions and I love being a part of that. We are also very fortunate to work with the most amazing couples, many of whom are still in touch with us now. Over the time of planning the wedding, we build a very strong bond with the couple.

9. Could you share the most unique and popular wedding services you offer?

The on-the-day package is proving very popular at the moment. This is for couples that may have a lower budget or who have already planned most of the wedding and want to continue to do so, but who want support on the day itself. For this service, we meet the couple a few weeks before the wedding and they hand over all the information, such as catering packages, supplier details and running order. We then compile these into an event sheet and take over the management of suppliers. Couples forget that in Dubai there are entertainment permissions that need granting and security cards for the suppliers on the day – all of this requires paperwork, which we will manage. On the day of the wedding, the couple will have a dedicated wedding planner to manage the supplier set-up, guest arrival and the logistical management until all the guests are happily dancing away at the end of the night.

10. Lastly, what advice would you like to give to the brides to be?

Create the wedding you want and not what someone else tells you you should do. Establish a budget and highlight the areas of importance to you. Enjoy every minute – this is your dream day and you want to look back and remember it as the happiest day of your life. And of course – hire a wedding planner.
